Last Hijack Interactive is an Emmy Award-winning online transmedia experience that explores the complex world of piracy in Somalia through a compelling, multi-perspective narrative. Serving as the digital counterpart to the feature-length documentary Last Hijack, this interactive project allows users to navigate the high-stakes reality of maritime hijacking through the eyes of both a Somali pirate and a Western ship captain.
By blending live-action footage, vivid animation, and real-time data visualizations, the project shows multiple perspectives of the opposing worlds. It follows Mohamed Nur, a pirate driven by financial desperation, alongside Colin Darch, a British captain taken hostage at sea. Beyond the central conflict, the experience incorporates the crucial voices of family members, journalists, lawyers, and negotiators from both Somalia and the West, illustrating how deeply the ripple effects of piracy impact global and local communities.
The project went on to win a prestigious Digital Emmy® Award for Non-Fiction, recognized for its groundbreaking approach to digital storytelling and its ability to turn a polarizing global issue into an immersive, human-centric experience.
