Submarine 3D Director/Generalist Internship – Social Media Content

Internships

Internships
Submarine gladly welcomes interns in various roles within the film company. Interns bring new knowledge and a fresh perspective to the field. They also make an important contribution to the execution of film productions and processes. At Submarine, interns have the opportunity to participate in international projects and ongoing productions, gaining first-hand experience in a film production company and insight into the different aspects of the industry.

Submarine consists of several departments, each requiring its own set of skills and educational backgrounds. Depending on your ambitions, we offer creative, organizational, media, and production-oriented internships in the fields of animation, documentary, and office support.

For Documentary and Office Support, please apply only to specific internship listings on our Careers Page.

We run an open call for interns interested in Animation throughout the year. If you’d like to apply, please send your portfolio and motivation to studiotalent@submarine.nl.
Please note: this email is only for animation internship inquiries.

About Submarine:
Submarine’s animation slate features a multitude of award-winning films and series, which
are as varied in style as in their target demographic. Submarine Animation prides itself in its
ability not to be confined to just one look or technique – putting the needs of each individual
project front-and-center. As such, we work with 2D as well as 3D animation, digital as well as
traditional crafts, and live-action/animation hybrids.
About the Production
We are currently producing a high-end, fully CG animated family feature film with a
distinctive stylised cinematic look. Created by a passionate, international team of artists and
technicians, the project is a South African co-production with Diprente and directed by Wip
Vernooij.
The film, Spike, follows a proud and powerful rhinoceros who loses his horn and is forced to
journey across the South African savanna alongside his estranged teenage son, Enzo. As
they search for their way home, Spike must confront a new reality, learning that true strength
lies not in power, but in vulnerability, connection, and growth.

About the Role
Alongside the feature production, we are also exploring the creation of short-form, vertical,
digital-first content centered around the world and characters of Spike. These shorts will
focus on quick visual storytelling, playful character moments, and highly shareable comedic
gags designed for online audiences and promotional use.
We are looking for aspiring 3D directors and multidisciplinary CG creatives who are excited
by short-form storytelling and visual comedy. The role combines elements of directing, visual
development, animation, and 3D generalist work, making it ideal for candidates eager to
develop both their artistic voice and technical versatility within a professional studio
environment.
You will work closely with the director, producer, and CG Supervisor, collaboratively
workshopping clips from initial idea through to the finished piece, while gaining hands-on
experience across both the creative and technical sides of production.

Responsibilities

  • Brainstorm and develop short-form visual gag concepts
  • Create storyboards and previs for ultra-short animated sequences
  • Animate and render simple, polished digital-first shorts
  • Work within an established production pipeline while experimenting with fast and
    efficient workflows
  • Incorporate feedback and creative direction effectively

What you will learn

  • Development of storytelling and visual comedy skills within short-form animation
  • Experience taking ideas from concept to final render
  • Further growth in animation, timing, staging, and cinematic language
  • Insight into digital-first content creation and emerging animation formats
  • Collaboration within a professional feature film production environment
  • Experience working in fast-paced creative sprints and iterative workflows
  • Exposure to industry feedback pipelines, reviews, and production meetings

Skills & Requirements

  • Strong interest in visual storytelling, comedy, and directing
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for experimentation and creative ideation
  • Storyboarding or basic previs experience
  • Willingness to receive and apply feedback
  • Good foundational skills in 3D animation and/or CG generalist workflows
  • Basic understanding of production pipelines is a plus
  • Experience with Autodesk Maya is required
