We’re hiring a Business Unit Controller!

Submarine is an Emmy Award-winning production company based in Amsterdam, Antwerp, London, and LA, and produces scripted, documentary and animation projects with a strong international focus. Submarine operates the largest animation studio in the Netherlands and, as of 2024, also runs a studio in Antwerp. Submarine is part of the international Mediawan Group.

We are looking for a Business Unit Controller for our Animation activities in Antwerp. You combine financial expertise with a hands-on mindset. In this role, you’ll be the financial backbone of the Animation BU, ensuring transparency, control, and insight.

As a Project Budget Controller you are responsible for the financial monitoring of one or more animation productions throughout the entire production lifecycle. You work closely with the Line Producer and Production Accountant and ensure that financial reporting, cost control, and forecasting remain accurate and up to date at all times.

You safeguard the financial health of the productions and ensure that all costs are properly recorded, monitored, and reported to management.

You will be based in the Antwerp Studio.

What you’ll do

✔ Work closely with the BU team and the Belgian Studio team on budgeting, planning & financing
✔ Provide cost reports, margin forecasts & cash planning per project
✔ Manage timesheets, cost coverage & (tax) incentive processes
✔ Deliver clear end-of-month reports to management

Responsibilities

• Financial monitoring of one or more animation productions.
• Monthly reporting to the CFO and Head of Productions.
• Monitoring production budgets and forecasts throughout the entire production cycle.
• Analyzing budget variances.
• Validating costs based on contracts, purchase orders, invoices, and time sheets.
• Working closely with the Production Accountant to ensure accurate accounting treatment and financial recording.
• Preparing cash flow reports and projections.
• Supporting audits, tax shelter applications, subsidy reporting, and financing reports as required.

What we ask

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in project controlling, production controlling, or production finance.
• Strong financial background (Controller or similar role)
• Analytical, accurate, and proactive
• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel
• Experience within media, animation, film, or television productions
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and monitor multiple projects simultaneously
• Strong communication skills and a pragmatic, hands-on approach
• Knowledge of regulations related to tax shelter, film fund, exact software, etc would be a great asset,
